Aid For Orphans Aid for Orphans is no longer in operation however they have some great referral links on their site. “A foundation of love. Aid for Orphans, since its inception has been a labor of love. Kim Becker opened her online retail store, The Baby Marketplace, to receive donations of gently used items and monetary donations toward formula, cloth diapers and cloth diaper covers in early 2002. The response was more than anticipated and she soon found her business and home buried beneath boxes of goods intended for the Ukrainian orphans. Knowing she could not continue to sustain the shipping fees on her own to get all these donations to the orphans, she began narrowing her focus to meet those dire needs in the Ukrainian orphanages. Kim has been blessed to have met two Ukrainian contacts that generously donate their time. They continue to seek out the needs of the orphans, take pictures and video of arriving shipments and are an immeasurable help in bridging the communication gap with the orphanages' administrators and caregivers.” http://www.aidfororphans.org Artists Helping Children "Artists Helping Children seeks to enhance the quality of life for sick, abused, or neglected children. This policy statement on breastfeeding replaces the 1997 policy statement of the American Academy of Pediatrics and reflects this newer knowledge and the supporting publications. The benefits of breastfeeding for the infant, the mother, and the community are summarized, and recommendations to guide the pediatrician and other health care professionals in assisting mothers in the initiation and maintenance of breastfeeding for healthy term infants and high-risk infants are presented. The policy statement delineates various ways in which pediatricians can promote, protect, and support breastfeeding not only in their individual practices but also in the hospital, medical school, community, and nation.” http://aappolicy.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/pediatrics;115/2/496 MADRE “MADRE is an international women's human rights organization that works in partnership with women's community-based groups in conflict areas worldwide. MADRE provides resources and training to enable our sister organizations to meet immediate needs in their communities and develop long-term solutions to the crises they face.” http://www.madre.org/ MomsRising "Shocking but true: There is deep bias against mothers in America today. One study found mothers are 44% less likely to be hired than equally qualified non-mothers, and are offered an average of $11,000 lower starting salaries. Another study found women without children make 90 cents to a man’s dollar, mothers make 73 cents, and single mothers make about 60 cents to a man’s dollar. MomsRising has a goal of bringing millions of people, who all share a common concern about the need to build a more family-friendly America, together as a non-partisan force for 2008 and beyond. This grassroots, online effort is mobilizing mothers, and all who have mothers, across America as a cohesive force for change. Started this May 2006, MomsRising already has nearly 90,000 citizen members, as well as more than seventy-five (and growing) aligned national organizations, working together to create positive solutions for the future. MomsRising aligned organizations include some of the nation’s strongest women's organizations, family advocacy groups, mother’s organizations, child advocacy groups, unions, health care organizations, parenting groups, the faith community, and many other organizations which have aligned missions to build a family-friendly America. (Here's who we're working with on this effort.)"
